Recipe Variations

Do I have to use green food coloring? No, you don’t have to use food coloring. The food coloring is purely to get that “green ice cream” look that you expect from the mint chocolate chip when you order it.

But it doesn’t need to be green at all so this is down to a personal preference. If you want dye free ice cream, absolutely omit it.

What can I use instead of chocolate chips? If you wanted you could get your favorite chocolate bar and crush it up to get some chunks of chocolate instead of using mini chocolate chips.

Make sure you reserve some to sprinkle on top.

You could also use unsweetened chocolate if you want to get a balance and add a bitter taste to it. With this easy ice cream recipe, you can change things up how you want.

Get saucy. You could add some chocolate sauce to this ice cream and swirl it through before freezing to add to the flavor.

Want to make it more creamy? You could swap out half of the heavy cream for whole milk instead. This will make it extra creamy.

Could I make a dairy-free option? Sure! Just ensure that you use a dairy-free alternative for the heavy cream.

Tips & Tricks

  • Make sure you plan ahead when it comes to making this mint chocolate chip ice cream recipe. We would recommend freezing overnight for the best texture and flavor, so this shouldn’t be your go-to in-a-hurry dessert idea. Giving it time helps to give this homemade ice cream recipe a creamy texture.
  • Try not to swap out the heavy cream for other low-fat ingredients. Using a high-fat heavy cream helps ensure you’ll end up with the best smooth mint chocolate chip ice cream.
  • Make sure you have ample time for freezing. This recipe recommends a good 6-8 hours, but overnight would be best.
  • If your ice cream is too hard to scoop, leave it out a little to soften the edges and help you get that smooth scoop.

Storage

Just like any other ice cream, store it in a freezer-safe container, like your Mason Jars in the freezer. Or you could use an airtight container.

FAQ

What type of mint is used in ice cream?

There are a few different varieties of mint you can get. Some will use fresh mint leaf whereas others will use artificial flavors.

You will find that many ice creams use things like a peppermint extract or would use a spearmint flavor, however, some mint chocolate chip ice creams will use peppermint as well.

Peppermint is a strong flavor so it just depends on how strong you want your mint chocolate chip ice cream to be.

Is mint chocolate chip ice cream peppermint or spearmint?

Most mint ice creams you can get in the store or when you are out would be more spearmint than peppermint in terms of flavor.

However, peppermint can be used and is just as tasty.

Spearmint is a little less overpowering whereas peppermint can have a stronger flavor. What they try and do is give you that natural flavor.

Why is mint chocolate chip ice cream no longer green?

Food coloring has always been used in mint chocolate ice cream and is often how you would see it in ice cream shops, however, many companies and brands have decided to remove artificial colors and sweeteners from their products which has meant the removal of the green food coloring.

Plus when you visually see green it can help to enhance the peppermint flavor. Nowadays you will find that most mint chocolate ice creams you get will be white.

But if you are making your own then you can choose to add the food green coloring if you wish. Just like we have done with this recipe.
