How To Make Homemade Dry Chocolate Chip Muffin Mix In A Jar

Here’s how to make your chocolate chip muffin mix and store it in a jar. More information about ingredients and quantities can be found in the recipe card below.

Dry Mix Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, add flour, sugar, salt, baking soda and powder. Use your spatula to stir it all together.
  2. Then add in your chocolate chips and pour mixture into a mason jar.

Muffin Baking Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 425F.
  2. Add all the wet baking ingredients to your mixing bowl and stir it together.
  3. Add in your dry mix ingredients and keep mixing until you start to form a batter.
  4. Use baking spray to spray the top of the muffin pan and inside each muffin mold. As the muffins overflow and create muffin tops, this spray will help to ensure the tops can come easily off the pan without destroying your gorgeous muffin tops.
  5. Add a cupcake/muffin liner to each mold.
  6. Pour batter into liners evenly.
  7. Bake in the oven for 7 minutes. Then decrease temp to 375F for 10-15 minutes.
  8. Once done in the oven, move to a cooling rack for about 10-15 minutes to cool and enjoy.

Variations

Leave out the chocolate chips – We’re sure there is a collective “gasp” happening right now in reading this, but you don’t have to add the chocolate chips if you don’t want them in the muffins.

Add nuts – Adding chopped pecans or walnuts would be a good addition for an added crunch!

Store the mix in a container – You don’t have to use a jar. If you have an airtight container, that’ll work just fine, too.

Wonderful Vanilla– use homemade vanilla extract to make these muffins even more magical!

Layer ingredients– to make this even more gift-giving friendly, choose to beautifully layer your muffin mix ingredients in the jar instead of mixing it all together. Using a funnel to do this can help make consistent, nice looking layers in the jar.

Tips & Tricks

  • When you get the muffin mix out of the jar and are ready to bake, give it a good stir again to mix the ingredients. They’ll setttle, even after a short time.
  • We recommend ordered some extra mason jars and lids to have on hand because once you make these muffin mix ingredients, you’re going to want to do even more.
  • Don’t skip the baking spray step as this really helps make removing the muffins easier from the pan.
  • Use a toothpick and insert it in the middle of the muffins to check for doneness. If the toothpick comes out clean, they’re done.
  • If choosing to layer your ingredients in the jar but need help with layering height, you can use cotton balls to “fluff” up the layers, just make sure to remove them from your mix before making muffins with it!
  • Make sure you’re checking the muffins after you decrease the temperature to ensure you end up with moist, not dry muffins, as this baking time can vary with each oven.

What Is The Secret To Making Moist Muffins?

The biggest tip to remember when making muffins from scratch is that you don’t want to overmix the batter. Mix the ingredients just enough so that they’re combined and then stop.

How Can I Make My Muffins Lighter And Fluffy?

A little tip that we’ve learned along the way is that you can help make fluffy muffins by having the eggs and milk at room temperature.

Why Are My Muffin Tops Flat?

The muffins tops occur because of the baking powder in the mix. Be sure that the container of baking powder is airtight because any time air gets to baking powder, it will cause it to lose it’s “gusto” which can then, in turn, cause baked goods to go flat.

Baking powder is good for about 6 months to a year max. we recommend either writing a use by date on your baking powder container or writing the date of when you opened the container on it and just remember when you have to use it by.

How To Store Homemade Dry Chocolate Chip Muffin Mix?

We recommend storing this muffin mix in an air-tight container, like a Mason Jar, and in a dry, cool, preferably darker area.

What Size Mason Jars To Use?

This recipe makes a total of 5 and 1/3 cup of dry muffin mix. This much mix makes about 12 large, fluffy muffins.

You can choose various sizes of jars to use depending on your intended use (personal or gifts).

This recipe was originally created to make 12 muffins and stored in a quart jar. But you make it as you see fit.

This recipe is VERY easy to double or triple for gift ideas in mason jars. Mason Jar gifts are perfect for holidays and so much more. Here are some other jar options too:

  • (2-Pack) 64-Ounces / Half Gallon Mason Jars with Bands and Lids.

How Long Is This Mix Good For?

We recommend using the freshest ingredients you can for this mix. This is especially important if you’re prepping or putting away this muffin mix to use for a later time.

As we mentioned earlier, the baking powder helps the muffins have a nice fluffy top, so make sure you use the newest baking powder you have available. And because this is so important, this kind of limits the “shelf life” you can get from this mix.

Baking powder is best used within a year, so this mix, if using the freshest ingredients, should be used in about a year for you to achieve fluffy, beautiful muffins.

However, if you’re not incredibly worried about the fluffy, gorgeous muffins, you could probably get a few more months out of the shelf life of this dry muffin mix.

Keep in mind, this is NOT something we’ve tried doing ourselves, but something we have seen from our readers and our audience that have tested this idea.

For safety reasons, we will say, try to use your mix within a year. Keep your ingredients “freshness” in mind. Especially if giving these mixes to friends and family.

Always include a note with the jars saying how to use the muffin mix and when to use it by.

You can also add a Made with Love sticker to the Jar lid and attach your muffin baking instructions to the jar with some twine for extra “cuteness” and “giftability”. Yes, we semi-made up those terms.
