Recipe Variations

Can I make a spicier version of the green enchilada sauce? You sure can! Just add green jalapeno peppers and cayenne pepper to the mixture and you will notice a more in-depth heat to the sauce.

You could also add fresh cilantro. This will help to increase the heat level.

My sauce seems too thick. If this is the case, you can add a little more water or some stock to the green enchilada sauce.

This might be needed if you are using it as a sauce in recipes like enchiladas and pasta dishes where a little more liquid is required.

There are great options to make this your very own enchilada sauce.

Do I need a blender or food processor for this recipe? If you don’t have a food processor or blender then a hand blender could be used.

You do need some sort of blender for this recipe as you need to combine the ingredients and make a smooth sauce when you finish.

My sauce is too spicy. If you have used the sauce in the dish but feel it is too spicy it is nothing a dollop of sour cream won’t fix.

Sour cream works great with homemade sauce and will help tone down any dish such as green enchiladas. Sometimes when you use this sauce in a slow cooker it can intensify the green chile enchilada sauce.

Want to make a big batch? You can make a double batch but increase the ingredients that you are using. This means that you can make more enchilada recipes or an easy dinner when you need it the most.

Tips & Tricks

  • Make sure the sauce has been reduced by 20% before you blend. This means the sauce won’t be too thin and can be used in different ways.
  • The food processor or blender will help you to get the smooth sauce that you want.
  • Give the onion and garlic time to saute in the saucepan. This helps to enhance the overall flavor.

If you have made the green enchilada sauce but have no need to use it just yet, then you can store it in an airtight container or sealed mason jars in the refrigerator.

You need to ensure that sauce has completely cooled before placing it in the refrigerator. You can store it for 5-7 days. Make sure you give it a stir before using it.

Are green enchilada sauce and salsa verde the same thing?

The main difference between these two sauces is that the green enchilada sauce is cooked whereas the salsa verde uses raw ingredients.

The enchilada sauce also requires liquid but the salsa verde doesn’t make it a thicker consistency.

What flavor is green enchilada sauce?

Green enchilada sauce is flavored with green chiles, and spices like cumin, garlic, and oregano. Green chili is the main ingredient in this easy recipe.

It is a spicy sauce but it isn’t too overwhelming. You can make it spicier by adding cayenne pepper and jalapenos to the mixture.

This recipe makes a really flavorful sauce that is much better than any store-bought enchilada sauce you can get.

What is the difference between green and red enchilada sauce?

The main difference between the green sauce and red enchilada sauce is the type of chilis that are used in the recipe.

The green enchilada sauce uses green chilies whereas the red enchilada sauce used red chilis.

The red enchilada sauce has a spicy taste to it whereas the green enchilada sauce has varying spice notes and more heat to it.
