How To Make The Watermelon Margarita

This is the full recipe to make the watermelon margarita.

  1. First of all, grab your blender and add the fresh lime juice, honey, and tequila. Mix well to combine the ingredients.
  2. Add your cubed ripe watermelon and blend until all of the ingredients have combined.
  3. The mixture will be thick, so you need to run the drink through a fine metal strainer or a fine-mesh sieve. Using a silicone spatula, you will be able to push the pulp through the strainer. Once you have done this you can discard the seeds and large pulp that will be left.
  4. Place the drink in a bowl, pitcher, or jug, and then refrigerate for 1 hour.
  5. Slice the lime you have left and rub it along the rim of your mason jar.
  6. Dip the mason jar in a small bowl with the salt. This will add salt to the rim of the glass.
  7. Once the drink has been refrigerated for one hour, take it out and give it a good mix. You could use a cocktail shaker for this if you wish.
  8. Add ice cubes to your prepared glass and then pour the refreshing Watermelon Rita over the ice.
  9. Garnish with a lime wedge and maybe even a watermelon wedge and you are good to go.
  10. Enjoy!

Recipe Variations

Want to add a little something extra to your Watermelon Margarita? Why not add some basil to make a Watermelon Basil Margarita? You can do this by muddling some basil and adding it to the blender. Use some basil leaves to garnish. It is the perfect refreshing drink.

What if you don’t like watermelon? Watermelon is the key ingredient and a great choice but it isn’t to everyone’s taste, but there are some other fruits that you can use. Making a melon margarita with a Honeydew or Canary melon will be just as nice and will give a different flavor.

Are there any alternatives to tequila? Sometimes tequila isn’t to everyone’s taste, so why not add vodka or rum instead?

Make the margarita extra special. You could freeze the cocktail and have a frozen margarita instead.

Tips & Tricks

  • Make sure you take the time to run the drink through a metal strainer. You don’t want any seeds or large pulp in your delicious cocktail.
  • Give the cocktail enough time to chill in the refrigerator. This helps the alcohol to infuse with the other ingredients.
  • The salted rim adds depth of flavor, but it isn’t essential.
  • A fine salt will give the best results for the rim of your glass. You might want to avoid things like sea salt or any other coarse salt as it won’t stay on the glass rim. You can pick up specific margarita salt if you wish.

Storage

If you do have any leftover Watermelon Margarita, then you will need to store it in the refrigerator. You could store it in sealed mason jars if you wish. It will last for 1-2 days but make sure you mix it well before serving. You could also freeze any leftovers. This makes a great frozen cocktail for a hot day. You will need to salt rim your glasses and add a slice of watermelon when ready to serve.

FAQ

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes, you can. It requires at least an hour of chill time, so you could make this on the morning of your dinner party or gathering, or even the day before if you wish. Don’t prep the glasses with the slated rim until you are ready to serve. Make sure you give the watermelon margarita a good mix before serving.

Can I make more?

If you need more quantities, perhaps for a party or gathering, then double up the ingredients. If you need to, make different batches so that you have enough space in your blender. This recipe serves 2, but you could easily double it up a few times to get the quantities you need.

Can I make a kid-friendly version?

Sure! Just leave out the tequila. The kids will love it and it is a great way to encourage them to enjoy fruit in a different way.

Would frozen watermelon work?

Fresh fruit always works well but the sweetness of the watermelon is not lost during the freezing process. But using frozen watermelon means you are more likely to have an icy cocktail. A high-speed blender will smooth it out a bit, but be mindful that the texture will be a little different. However, once you add your favorite tequila to it I am sure you won’t mind. You might still want to strain it through a fine mesh strainer.
