How To Make Frozen DIY Hot Cocoa Bombs

    1. In a saucepan add water and turn stove on to medium heat.
    2. Place mixing bowl on top to warm the bowl.
    3. Add in your blue candy melts, stirring with a spatula until they’re melted.
    4. Using the back of a spoon, add melted candy melts to the bomb molds and smear around to fully coat the half circle shape cut out. Make sure to do this in one thin layer so you don’t make your shells too thick.
    5. Freeze the molds and candy for 10 minutes and remove from freezer. If you can see through to the mold, lightly apply another layer of candy melts to that specific area and freeze for another 10 minutes before removing again.
    6. Carefully flip the mold upside down and remove the spheres from the mold and put on a plate.
    7. Using a different saucepan, turn the heat on low heat. Place one of the spheres rim down on the saucepan to carefully melt the rim a bit to smooth edges.
    8. Quickly add 2 Tablespoons of hot cocoa mix and marshmallows to the sphere and grab the other half of the sphere. Melt the second half a bit and stick the 2 halves together to form a full circle cocoa bomb shell. Set aside to dry.
    9. Melt the white chocolate candy melts via your preferred way and drizzle some on top of the bomb and then add sprinkles. Let it completely dry and repeat with your remaining shells.
    10. To serve: set bomb in a Mason Jar and pour hot milk or water on top of the bomb and watch it explode and dissolve. Use a spoon to mix it all together and enjoy.

    Recipe Variations

    • Swap hot chocolate mix– don’t have any homemade on hand? You can use whatever store-bought one you have, like Swiss Miss.
    • Use various sprinkles- don’t want a winter or frozen theme? Use any sprinkles, or try our Snowman Hot Chocolate Bombs.
    • Add liquor– for those of legal drinking age, add a dash of something like Homemade Baileys or Kahlua.

    Tips

    • You can also use a microwave to melt the candy melts or a chocolate melting pot.
    • Don’t make your bomb shells too thick or they won’t freeze well and stay together.
    • Make sure to store the bombs properly, as shared below, so they last longer.

How Do You Store Hot Chocolate Bombs?

Storing these homemade creations is the key to helping them stay delicious for as long as possible.

Make sure to store your completed chocolate bombs in an air tight container that’s easy to use, and why we recommend a Mason Jar.

Store your bombs in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

Do not store them in an area where the temperature can get hot (as they’ll melt) or where the temperature fluctuates a lot.

How Long Do Hot Chocolate Bombs Last

If you’re giving these as gifts, you need to know this info for sure.

Plan ahead and make sure you make them ahead of time so you can enjoy them.

If stored properly, these chocolate frozen bombs can last up to 60 days. Reminder- We recommend storing in a cool, dry, dark place.

If you want to store them in the refrigerator, they’ll only last about a month.

And a big important note- Make sure they’ve cooled completely BEFORE putting them in the refrigerator to help reduce the risk of condensation forming on them and ruining them.

Can You Freeze Hot Cocoa Bombs?

Feel free to freeze them, this will help them last even longer and you can enjoy them at a different time. You can freeze them for up to 3 months.

How to Thaw- Pull them out of the freezer and place in the fridge overnight to thaw out. Do not put in the microwave or use any heat source to thaw them as this could potentially melt your cocoa bombs.

Be sure to add them to your freezer inventory list (get yours today) to keep track of what you have stored and when you have to use them by.

Where Can You Get The Bomb Molds From?

We grabbed ours from Amazon, but making this has become such a popular thing that everyday stores have started to carry them too. You can check out your local Walmart and Target too.

You can even get various kinds of molds to make different shaped and different flavored bombs. Grab one of our favorites shared below:
