Helpful Tips

Here are some tips for making the best hummus:

  • Both home-cooked and canned chickpeas will work for this recipe. But you must ensure that chickpeas are drained and dried properly before adding them to the hummus.
  • Chickpeas should be completely cooked. If you add uncooked chickpeas to your hummus, it will become grainy.
  • If you don’t like the thick consistency of hummus, you can add some chickpeas water or plain water to get your desired consistency. Don’t add too much water because you can’t use liquidy hummus as a spread.
  • As this recipe doesn’t demand any hard to get ingredients, make sure to use fresh ingredients to make homemade hummus. Especially, your spices should be fresh if you want to enjoy the best taste of hummus.
  • Instead of a blender, you can use the bowl of a food processor to blend all of your main ingredients together to combine the delicious flavors of your creamy hummus.

Leftover hummus should be stored in a mason jar or airtight container and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days. This homemade hummus doesn't last as long as the store bought regular hummus because it doesn't contain preservatives like citric acid.

Recipe Variations

These variations to our classic red pepper hummus recipe

will make it easy for you to customize hummus as per your taste or make it when you don’t have some ingredients.

Use roasted garlic - If you want to caramelize the flavor of homemade red bell pepper hummus, add some roasted garlic instead of using raw garlic cloves, it's definitely adding great flavor.

Want to make your hummus spicy? To make your dip spicy, add some jalapeno or cayenne pepper. These will add a spicy flavor, but not too much that kids can’t handle it.

Want to skip tahini? If tahini isn’t available or you don’t like its flavor, you can skip it. Replace it with peanut butter, cashew butter, almond butter or other nut butter. This will make a delicious roasted red pepper hummus without tahini recipe. You can even adjust the amount of tahini you use in this recipe if you don't want to use a lot.

Want to add some texture? Add some pine nuts, sesame seeds, or even Chia seeds. Any of these options would be a great addition to this easy recipe.
