- Add water and sugar to saucepan and bring to a boil, making sure to stir well and continue to stir to prevent it from burning.
- Once it has started to boil, reduce heat to a low simmer and wait until it’s no longer boiling, then add in half of your peppermint extract. Stir everything together well.
- Leave this mixture on low and use a small bowl to mix together your warm water and baking cocoa to create a paste.
- Add espresso to your paste mixture, and then the remaining peppermint extract.
- Add your paste, your desired amount of syrup (we like to use 1 tablespoon), and your steamed milk to your iced mason jar. Stir and drink as is, or with whipped cream and crushed up candy canes!







Recipe Variations
No peppermint extract? You can try and use creme de menthe instead.
Not a fan of candy canes? Leave them out and crush up mint chocolate on top instead.
Want to make this kid-friendly? If you’re not wanting your kids to have a loaded dose of caffeine, we totally get that! You can use hot chocolate mix instead of espresso for them.
Make this hot or cold– Either serve it over ice or serve it as a hot latte.
Adjust flavors– add more or less peppermint extract, add simple syrup, regular sugar or sugar alternatives and you can use flavored creamers to bring other flavors to your mint mocha drink.
Tips and Tricks
- Using an espresso machine to make your espresso ahead of time makes this recipe a little faster. But if you don’t have espresso, you can use EXTRA strong coffee, it may change the taste a little.
- Use your espresso machine to steam your milk, if you have no machine, you can microwave your milk.
- Use fresh coffee beans for the best flavor.

Can You Make Hot Espresso From Scratch?
You can! If you have an espresso machine, that would be the easiest but if you don’t, you can use a French press to make hot espresso at home.
