Storage

Once you have made the chocolate sauce you can store it in an airtight container (your mason jar works best!).

Keep it at room temperature or in the fridge and it will last for up to a month.

You may need to microwave the sauce before using it if keeping in the fridge.

Recipe Variations

Why not change up the flavor? You could look to create a chocolate peanut butter magic shell by adding some peanut butter to the chocolate chips. You won't need as much coconut oil as there is oil in the peanut butter which will help get that thin shell topping you desire. You could also add peppermint extract or other flavorings.

Get creative. We all know that chocolate is something that works well with other flavors and this delicious chocolate sauce will work well with the addition of sea salt or even chili. Why not get creative with your ingredients?

Use different chocolate. You can use white or dark chocolate chips instead. This will give a different flavor to the melted chocolate.

Switch out the chocolate. Why not try butterscotch chips instead? This will make a delicious caramel sauce topping that will also harden when added to cold temperatures. An ideal option for vanilla ice cream.

FAQ

How does chocolate magic shell work?

This is such a clever way to get that magic shell of chocolate and the reason it hardens is down to the coconut oil that you add. You can add this magic chocolate shell sauce to your favorite ice cream or other cold desserts.

Does Magic Shell only work on ice cream?

Magic Shell is specifically designed to work on ice cream. It has a unique formula that hardens quickly when it comes in contact with the cold frozen dessert, creating a crunchy yet delicious topping.

But the great thing about Magic Shell is that it doesn't just have to be used for ice cream! It can also be used on other frozen treats like yogurt, sorbet, and even frozen fruit.

The possibilities are endless! So although Magic Shell was made to work on ice cream, it can also be used with many other types of desserts as well.

Why does Magic Shell get hard?

Making Magic Shell is simple: just combine your favorite chocolate and coconut oil in the right proportions, heat it up, and then pour or spread it over your favorite ice cream. The result? A wonderfully crunchy topping that gets hard when you put it in the freezer.

This is because when heated, the cocoa butter and coconut oil separate and break down into tiny droplets, which can now form a solid shell when cooled.

When the ice cream melts, these droplets come together to create a smooth coating that stays hard until it's time for another bite!

Do you refrigerate Magic Shell?

Yes! Magic Shell is best kept refrigerated. It will last about 6 months when stored in an air-tight container or jar in the refrigerator.

Refrigerating it helps maintain its consistency and flavor, so that the topping can be used over and over again without loss of quality.

Be sure to give it a stir before use after refrigeration to ensure even texture.

Can I make this ahead of time?

Sure! Just microwave as necessary to bring it to the proper consistency when ready to use.
