How To Make The Nutella Hot Chocolate

You can make these easy Nutella Hot Chocolate on the stove or in the Slow Cooker. We have provided both methods for you.

Stove Top Instructions

  1. One of the traditional ways to make hot chocolate is on the stove. For this recipe, you need to whisk the milk, cocoa powder, Nutella, and chocolate chips in a medium-sized pot.
  2. Cook on medium-high heat until Nutella and chocolate chips melt fully. You will want to keep an eye on the pot.
  3. Simmer for 5-10 mins on a medium heat. Make sure you stir the hot chocolate mixture regularly to avoid the chocolate from burning.
  4. Serve with whipped cream or marshmallows.
  5. Enjoy!

Slowcooker instructions:

  1. A new way to make hot chocolate is in your slow cooker. Simple and easy to prepare you just add the cocoa powder, Nutella, milk, and chocolate chips to a slow cooker,
  2. Switch your slow cooker on low and let it do its thing for 2 hours. For this method, you just need to stir occasionally
  3. Serve with toppings and enjoy!

Recipe Variations

Want to make an adults-only version? This would be a great option if you did. The best way to do that is to add a shot of your choice of alcohol into the mason jar or mug before you add the hot chocolate. It keeps the whole batch family friendly but you can make your own version suitable for you. Rum, hazelnut liqueur, Chocolate liqueur, or an Irish Cream Liquor would work so well!

Make your hot chocolate fancy. Melt down some Nutella, add to a piping bag, and drizzle over whipped cream, add some mini marshmallows, or Shave some chocolate and add it to the top. Yum!

Trade out your milk. Instead of using cow’s milk why not add to the overall flavor and use something different? Almond milk would work well as well as soy, oat milk, cashew milk or coconut milk. You could also try dairy-free milk if you wish.

Want to make this a mocha? You could add some shots of espresso if you want a caffeine hit. Make sure to use decaffeinated coffee if the kids are enjoying it.

What about making this an iced drink? If you want to enjoy this chocolate drink as a cold beverage then you can. You will need to let the hot chocolate cool completely and then add ice to it. Be mindful that the ice will dilute the flavors.

Do I have to use Nutella? Any chocolate hazelnut spread will work just as well.

Tips & Tricks

  • The Slow Cooker Nutella hot chocolate will be hot when it’s cooked, so be careful when serving it to children. You may want to add it to a mug or mason jar and let it cool a little before they enjoy it.
  • Whole milk is the preferred option for hot chocolate because of its fat content, but you can use other milk if you prefer.
  • If using the stovetop Nutella hot chocolate method then make sure you stir it often to avoid the chocolate from burning. Burnt chocolate is bitter and will change the whole flavor of the drink.
  • The perfect hot chocolate drink to enjoy on the go if you are out and about doing all of the festive things.

Storage

This is a drink that is best enjoyed straight away. The nature of the ingredients does mean that it doesn’t store them for too long.

You may be able to keep it in an airtight container for up to a day in the refrigerator. If you do make sure that you let it cool down completely. However, we wouldn’t recommend any longer than that.

FAQ

Can you freeze this creamy Nutella hot chocolate?

This is an indulgent hot chocolate that we don’t recommend that you freeze. This is best enjoyed as you make it due to the nature of the ingredients.

What should I do with any leftover Nutella?

There are so many things you can do with any leftover Nutella. You can use it as a dip, bake with it, or spread it on some bread or toast. Yum!

Does Nutella taste good with milk?

The answer is yes! This Nutella hot chocolate is a revelation. The Nutella melts really well when heated with the milk, and creates a creamy, frothy, and tasty hot cocoa drink for you to enjoy. You can also combine it to make a cold drink. The Nutella will need to be melted separately before being added to the milk.
