All About Pumpkin
Here are some fun facts about pumpkin you may or may not know:
- Pumpkins can last up to three months once picked if you store them in a cool, dark spot without cutting them.
- There are hundreds of varieties of pumpkins to choose from.
- Plant your seeds in the first week of June for Halloween pumpkins.
- Pumpkins have a lot of health benefits in them. They’re a good source of protein, zinc magnesium, manganese, copper and VItamin C. Great for boosting immune systems!
- Similar to watermelons, pumpkins are 80-90% made of water.
What Is Pumpkin Syrup
Pumpkin Syrup or Pumpkin Sauce is a liquid sweetener. It’s something that you can make to add to your home coffee drinks, hot tea recipes, fall baking dishes or even use like traditional syrup on top of breakfast items.
It’s made using some kind of pumpkin base- like canned puree or fresh pumpkin pulp and then typically has pumpkin spice in it, similar to the taste you get from a homemade pumpkin pie.

Recipe Variations
- Omit Pumpkin Puree- If you’re looking for a pumpkin spice syrup recipe without pumpkin puree- here you go, just swap the puree out for pure, real pumpkin to make sure you get that pumpkin flavor. We don’t recommend using pumpkin pie filling though!
- Add a dash of vanilla extract for a real treat.
Surprisingly, many store bought Pumpkin Spice Coffee Syrup brands DO NOT contain pumpkin. Many store bought syrups are flavored with other things that are similar to bring out that flavor.
However, this homemade pumpkin syrup does contain pumpkin puree.
Plus, we should mention if you’re looking for a pumpkin spice syrup recipe without pumpkin puree, we have you covered in the variations section above!
Nope, folks, this is not a copycat of the famous syrup they use in PSL’s. In fact, we think this syrup is even better than that store bought stuff.
Our recipe only has 4 ingredients, while they have more and other preservatives in their recipe. The website says it includes: “sugar, condensed skim milk, pumpkin puree, fruit and vegetable juice for color, “natural flavors,” annatto, salt, and potassium sorbate”.
Our syrup doesn’t have half that crap, and you should be darn proud of that when you go to add it to your drinks and food recipes.

We recommend storing in a Mason Jar and refrigerating if possible.
We do recommend that you store in the refrigerator for optimal storage. You may notice that your syrup gets thicker in the refrigerator.
This DIY pumpkin spice syrup is good for about a month once stored in an airtight container, or Mason Jar, in the refrigerator.
What Do You Put Syrup On?
- Hot Tea
- Coffees
- Hot Chocolate
- Pumpkin Waffles or Pancakes
- Drizzle on Pumpkin Pie
- Drizzle on Pumpkin Drinks
- Add to the top of Oatmeal or Yogurt
- DIY Pumpkin Cinnamon Ice Cream
- So much more, the options are endless
Can You Freeze Pumpkin Puree?
Yes, you can freeze pumpkin puree, but you must remove it from the can first.
We recommend storing it in freezer bags or air tight containers until you’re ready to use it.
Since you only need a little bit for this recipe (and many others), you can freeze in an ice cube tray for individual servings. Once frozen, pop all the little servings and put in an air tight container or bag and label everything.

Can You Use Frozen Pumpkin?
We don’t recommend using frozen pumpkin in this syrup recipe.
Pumpkin is super quick at thawing. It usually only takes an hour or so to thaw, even less time if you’ve freezed what you needed into ice cube trays so they’re smaller sizes.
If you know you’re going to need to use frozen pumpkin the night before, grab what you need out of the freezer and put it in the fridge overnight to thaw. It will be plenty of time to help it get ready and be the right consistency when you want to use it for your homemade syrup.
