All About This Drink - Where Did The Purple Rain Name Come From?

The Purple Rain mixed drink name actually refers to at least two popular mixed drinks.

The most common one is a variation on a Long Island Iced Tea, substituting Chambord for Triple Sec and a lemon-lime soda for the cola.

The other variation is a drink, like this one, made from vodka, lemonade, blue Curaçao, and grenadine.

The name of this version of the Purple Rain comes from the purple appearance of the drink due to the combination of the red grenadine and blue Curaçao.

How does this become a purple drink?

You would think this would end up being a blue color or green cocktail when you see Blue Curacao and pineapple juice in the ingredients.

However, once you add in the grenadine, you'll end up with a gorgeously purple hue in your cocktail.

Purple Rain Cocktail Variations

Make it non alcoholic- Trade out the vodka for club soda or soda water

Swap out the pineapple juice- Try cranberry juice or orange juice instead to bring another flavor to this drink

Swap grenadine- Instead, try some pomegranate juice, you'll still keep your pretty purple color with this. You can also add more maraschino cherries for color and flavor.

Swap corn syrup- try maple syrup, simple syrup or lime juice to help the sprinkles stick to the rim of the glass

Change garnishes- This drink has a purple sugar rim and a lime wheel on the rim of a glass with the cherry to garnish it, but you can trade these out. Try to use oranges, purple grapes or raspberries.

Use different glitter- to really bring a new look to this easy cocktail, try different glitter colors or sprinkles

Add fun- toss a few twizzle sticks in for fun or other fun garnishes to take this drink up a level

Don't want to use a mason jar? No problem, instead you can serve this drink in a collins glass, rocks, glass, martini glass, wine glass, or even in multiple shot glasses.
