Recipe Variations

Can I make a decaffeinated version? Absolutely. Just use decaf coffee instead and then follow the recipe as stated. This means that you can make it kid-friendly as well because let’s face it, kids already have enough energy.

Make it vegan. Yes, you could make this vegan by using vegan-friendly milk as well as a vegan-friendly whipped cream. You can also find vegan-friendly chocolate. There will be a slight difference in taste, but I am sure it will taste just as delicious.

Don’t have a blender. It does make things easier to have a blender but you could improvise with a hand blender. In this case, it may be better to use crushed ice instead of cubes.

Fancy not using coffee at all? You could make a mocha instead. Substitute the coffee for extra milk and perhaps even add a scoop of vanilla or chocolate ice cream. This will intensify the chocolate flavor. Perfect if you have a sweet tooth. You can even get some mocha drizzle.

Want to make it more creamy? Instead of using all whole milk you can use half and half with heavy cream, or just use heavy cream instead.

Tips & Tricks

  • It is important to ensure that you combine all of the ingredients to help ensure that the flavors are there.
  • While Starbucks will use a particular Italian roast blend but don’t feel pressure to use the same. You can use Instant coffee or whatever you prefer. As long as the coffee is brewed and chilled you are good to go.

You could even use some mocha sauce if you have any. Add your coffee mixture and then top with whipped cream and your choice of toppings.

We love adding sauce, chocolate chips, and a sprinkle of cocoa powder.

Another suggestion would be some crumbled-up cookie crumbs for a bit of texture or even vanilla syrup to make it sweeter.
